8. GUN EMPLACEMENTS

8.1 The two 8-in. Gun Emplacements installed by the Japanese on the western end of Betio are represented on the BRT map by the gray, two-hex, building-like structure in hexes D5 and E6 enclosed by two-toned brown Contour lines.4 The Gun Emplacement structure (including the contour lines) is a half-level LOS obstacle. No Fortification, Gun, or vehicle counter may set-up-in/enter a Gun Emplacement hex. Infantry in a Gm Emplacement hex receive a +1 TEM. Each Gun Emplacement hex contains one 8" Gun Turret (8.2).

8.2 8-IN GUN TURRETS: The turrets that housed the Vickers 8-in. Coastal Defense Guns on Betio are represented by special Armored Cupola counters. Each 8-in. Gun Turret is treated as an Open Topped Armored Cupola (D9.5, SSR BRT 12) with a large (-1) Target Size, front and side AF of 2, a rear AF of 0, a ST turret, an inherent vehicular crew, and a MA consisting of a 200L Gun with a minimum range of 12 hexes and a maximum range of 500 hexes (see Japanese Vehicle Note 19). The manning crew cannot BU (even if Stunned) and receives a +3 CE DRM. An 8-in Gun Turret counter is treated as an immobile, open-Topped AFV for CC purposes [EXC: PAATC NA] and is considered equal to two squad-equivalents for stacking purposes. Due to the elevated status of the Gun turret in hex E6, attacks by/vs the Gun turret in hex E6 treat the Gun Emplacement in hex D5 as if it were non-existent (i.e., ignore the D5 Gun Emplacement altogether). Any non-CC attack that eliminates the Armored Cupola also eliminates all Personnel in the hex.
